There is a story of a black family that crossed what is now Lake Ontario in the 1600's, heading to what is now Quebec. The father figure was born a female but was made to live as a male in the community and had a daughter. He/She was offered an African wife and were expected to be heading North on her arrival. When they got to the lake, the African mother must have told her to throw the girl because she did not want to raise a foreign and she woukd have the authority as the mother of the family's children when the "mother" was really born a male but made to live as a female. The fur trappers were very hostile so if you do not feel like a real family, they were more likely to let you live. The natives were not hostile but would just move if you come into the area. So, the father threw the girl when he was told. Her name was Rachel Cannon.
